Season Summary

Season 191 began with the Premier Cup, which was won by Arsenal with a 3—2 victory over Wolves in the final. It is their sixth win of this trophy.

Arsenal continued their form into the league, which they led until the 12 match day, after which Chelsea took over at the top, followed closely by Manchester United. These three continued in this manner until Chelsea fell away and Spurs took over in 3rd spot. Chelsea came back, however, but did not challenge the top two, Arsenal and Manchester United, and finished in 3rd place. United clinched the title, their 19th overall, on the penultimate match day with a 1—0 victory at Chelsea, finishing 5 points clear of Arsenal. Chelsea and Tottenham clinched the other two Euro League places, followed by Newcastle and Fulham who will play in the Euro Cup next season. Liverpool clinched a place in the Euro Cup by winning the A.F.L. Cup, despite a dismal season that saw them finish in 16th place, just 7 points clear of the relegation zone.

At the bottom end of the Premier Division, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Cardiff City dropped back into Division 1. The three promoted teams, Sheffield United, Millwall and Watford, all did very well finishing in 12th, 13th and 14th places respectively. Blackburn Rovers completed a second season in the top flight by avoiding the drop by 7 points.

In Division 1, Norwich and Crystal Palace returned to the top flight, the latter after just one season in the lower division, whilst Bristol City defeated Brighton in the play-off final to move up to the Premier Division for the first time since Season 120, 72 seasons ago! At the bottom Burton Albion, Luton Town and Doncaster Rovers fell into Division 2.

In Division 2 Stoke City won the title with an impressive 96 points, and were accompanied by Wycombe Wanderers in moving up to the second tier. Sixth-placed Lincoln City won the play-off final against a more fancied Middlesbrough side and also moved up to Division 1. Accrington, Newport and Oxford dropped into the bottom division. In Division 3, Crewe were the champions and were accompanied by Blackpool and play-off winners Swindon Town in promotion to the third tier. Cheltenham and Carlisle dropped out of the league and will be replaced by Tranmere Rovers and Salford City next season.
