Season Summary

The A·F·L Chart Soccer season 189 began as usual with the Premier Cup tournament, which was won by Manchester City, with a 3–2 victory against Manchester United in the final.

In the league, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur built up a commanding lead over the chasing pack by the 24-match stage, with Chelsea in third place 9 points behind Spurs. However a disastrous run of six consecutive defeats for Spurs left Manchester United out on their own after 28 games, with a 9-point lead over rivals Manchester City. They then had a bad run of results themselves and City threatened to catch them up. A crucial game was the round 34 contest against West Ham United at the London Stadium, as the Hammers were in good form at this time also. The Hammers actually put four goals past City in this game but City ran out the winners with an incredible score of 5—4. This meant they kept the pressure on their city rivals, but United also performed well, with a run of wins towards the end of the season. The title was clinched in Round 35 in a 4—1 win against Leicester City. City then suffered a slump and were overtaken by Spurs and Chelsea who took 2nd and 3rd places. The title win is United's 18th overall, 7 wins behind overall leaders Arsenal.

In Division I, Derby County took the title and Blackburn Rovers took the step up to the top division along with them. These clubs were last in the top flight in Season 179 and 178 respectively. In the play-offs, fourth-placed Southampton returned to the top flight after three seasons in the second tier. At the bottom, Birmingham dropped back to the third tier along with north-east sides Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

In Division II Queen's Park Rangers won the title and Nottingham Forest went up with them. Brentford made an immediate return to Division I by defeating Burton Albion in the play-off final. At the bottom end, Crewe and Blackpool went down to the bottom tier along with Walsall, who suffered the ignominy of being relegated for the second successive season.

In Division III, Lincoln City won the title and Forest Green Rovers won the play-offs to progress with them and runners-up A.F.C. Wimbledon. Newly promoted Morecambe did very well to finish in 8th place. The relegated clubs were Grimsby Town and Leyton Orient, the latter only having been in the A.F.L. for three seasons. They will be looking to make a quick return next season.

In the A.F.L. Cup, Arsenal won their 14th win of the trophy, with an emphatic 4—1 win against Division I side Burnley in the final. It was a season for the unfancied sides as Arsenal were the only Premier Division team to progress beyond the quarter-finals. They defeated Reading by an impressive aggregate scoreline of 8—2, whilst Burnley overcame West Bromwich 5—4 on aggregate in the other semi-final. Port Vale from Division III had a great run as they reached the quarter-finals.
