Season Summary

The A·F·L Chart Soccer season 187 has kicked off once more with the Premier Cup tournament, which was won by Chelsea, with a 1–0 victory against Arsenal in the final.

In the Premier Division, last season's top two, Wolves and Manchester United, started off well and looked like they would be the main contenders for the title. However, they both faltered after around 15 matches and Liverpool and Manchester City took over. Liverpool carried on in good form as Manchester City dropped a few points, and although they came back strongly, it wasn't enough to stop the Merseysiders from winning their ninth title. City finished second, and last season's champions, Wolves, third. Arsenal, who were the form team in the latter part of the season, recovered from a poor start to finish in fourth place and clinch the final place in the Euro League. Everton, who were also one of the form teams later in the season, clinched a Euro Cup place in fifth spot and Manchester United, who had faded badly towards the end of the season, just managed to do the same by finishing sixth. United also reached the A·F·L Cup final but lost 3—0 to Norwich City. This meant that Norwich clinched the third Euro Cup spot at the expense of seventh placed Chelsea. However, as Chelsea won the Euro Cup they will still qualify as an extra entrant in that competition.

At the bottom, Cardiff went down after a poor start and a few seasons in the top flight, along with last season's Division One play-off winners Charlton. West Ham and Sheffield United were the other relegation contenders towards the end of the season, but a 2—1 win for the Sheffield side clinched their place in next season's top flight, and the Hammers went down after ten consecutive seasons in the Premier Division.

In Division One, Fulham returned to the top flight after three seasons in the second tier, along with Sheffield Wednesday, meaning there will be two clubs from Sheffield in the top division for the first time in many seasons. Reading returned at the first time of asking after comprehensively defeating Middlesbrough 8—2 on aggregate in the first round of the play-offs and Southampton 2—0 in the final.
