Season Summary

The 182nd season of A·F·L Chart Soccer kicked off with the Premier Cup, involving the 20 Premiership clubs. The winners this season were Arsenal, who defeated Chelsea 2—1 in the final to chalk up their fourth win in the competition.

In the league, the pace was set by Manchester City and Chelsea from the start, with less fancied teams Watford and Crystal Palace putting on a good show. Watford kept up the pace right to the end, and still had a chance of even winning the title with two games left to play. A 3—0 defeat at Old Trafford put paid to their hopes, however. City, however, had built up a lead of 11 points with only 7 games left to play, but a poor run of results, which saw them only garner 2 points from 6 matches, saw that lead cut to only 3 points. In the penultimate match of the season it came down to a show-down at Stamford Bridge, where a win for the home side would have put them top of the table on goal difference, but City won the match with the only goal of the game, thus clinching their 11th title. Watford finished third, and thus assured themselves of european football next season, whilst Manchester United finished fourth.

At the bottom, Newcastle looked set for the drop from quite early on, and indeed their fate was sealed three matches from the end of the season. The other two relegation spots, however, were in the balance until the final day of the season. With one game to go Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff and Southampton were all on 37 points, with Stoke City on 36 points. Stoke only manages a draw at Bournemouth and hence went down with Newcastle. Cardiff's win at home to Huddersfield took them to safety, whilst Wednesday gave themselves hope with a 4—1 win at home to West Brom. This left Southampton needing a win by two clear goals to survive, and that they did with a 2—0 win at Aston Villa, thus sending Wednesday back to Division I.
