Season 189 of the S.C.S.L. began with the Summer Cup, which was won by Dundee United with a 1—0 win over Rangers in the final.

In the league, Motherwell started in good form following on from their title win last season, closely pursued by Aberdeen. By the 16-match stage the Dons had built up a 10-point lead over Motherwell, but this was slowly whittled away over the next few match days. Rangers and Celtic, who has started poorly, beagan to make up ground, and in the last half dozen matches any of the four could have won the title. In the closing stages, however, Celtic challenged strongly, and with two matches to go Aberdeen were on the cusp of the title, with Motherwell and Celtic 5 points behind but with much better goal differences. Aberdeen were due to play Motherwell, so a draw would be enough for the Dons in that matchup, and so it proved, with the sides sharing 6 goals in the penultimate round of matches. Celtic meanwhile won 4—1 at St Johnstone, so only they could catch Aberdeen. In the final round, however, the Dons comfortably defeated Motherwell 4—2 to take the title, while Celtic's challenge fizzled out with a 1—1 draw against St Johnstone at Celtic Park. It is the tenth title for the North East side. Rangers sneaked into third place and pushed Motherwell into fourth position.

At the bottom, Alloa looked doomed from early on, and they finished bottom after a good few seasons in the top flight. Queen of the South took the return trip to the Second Division, whilst Kilmarnock had to take part in the relegation play-off.

In the second tier, Ross County won the title but had to battle hold off a strong challenge from newly promoted Forfar Athletic, who held on for second place and therefore a second successive promotion. Inverness, Raith Rovers and Clyde qualified for the play-off slots. At the bottom, Elgin dropped out of the division and will be replaced by Falkirk, whilst Airdrie have to play-off for their position in the league for the second successive season.

In the play-offs, Clyde defeated Raith Rovers in the first round but were beaten by Inverness in the second round. Inverness defeated Kilmarnock in the final, thus producing the unusual situation of a second tier team taking part in the Euro Cup next season. Edinburgh City defeated Airdrie in the Second Division play-off final.
