Season 187 of the S.S.L. began with the Summer Cup, which was won by Rangers who defeated Celtic 2—1 after extra time.

In the league, reigning champions Celtic got off to a good start, pursued by Hibs and Rangers. Rangers, however, suffered a bit of a slump in mid-season and fell to fifth place, whereas Hibs kept up a good challenge on Celtic. From the halfway point, however, Hibs stuttered and Aberdeen became the form team, gaining 34 points from 12 matches from rounds 13 to 24, leaving them 2 points behind Celtic at this stage and in a great position to challenge for the title. However, the Dons then faltered themselves and Hibs, who had fallen to 5 points off the lead, came back strongly. Celtic suffered an excruciatingly bad run-in, only gaining 5 points from their last 6 matches, leaving Hibs and Aberdeen to tussle for the title. The Edinburgh side prevailed as Aberdeen lost twice to Rangers, and won their twelfth title and their first since Season 168, finishing 3 points ahead of Aberdeen. Rangers finished strongly and actually caught up with Celtic, pushing them into a fourth place finish.

At the bottom, Morton looked set for the drop but fought their way up to eighteenth for the right to a play-off against the Division 'B' play-off winners, which they won as related below. Inverness, last season's over-achievers in Division 'B', finished bottom and Ayr United, who had started the season well, went down with them.

In Division 'B', Clyde led the table for most of the season, only being overhauled by Dundee in the final two matches, but they clinched a place in the top division whilst Dundee won their way back to the top flight after being relegated last season. Arbroath finished third and won their way to the play-off game against third bottom Morton from Division 'A', but the Greenock side were too strong, winning the contest 4—2 over two legs, and thus kept their place in the top division.

At the bottom, Montrose looked likely to be relegated, as they went eight games before winning a point and twelve before their first win. However, they improved in the latter half of the season to clinch a play-off place, whilst Cowdenbeath fell into bottom place and dropped into Division 'C1'.

Rangers completed the cup double in another all Old Firm final against Celtic, winning 3—2, to win the cup for the twentieth time, leaving them still 8 wins behind Hearts and 12 behind Celtic overall.
