Season 185 Season 187

Season 186 of the S.C.S.L. began with the Summer Cup, which has been expanded to include the 32 Division 'A' and 'B' teams. The Cup was won by Celtic against Alloa Athletic, who upset the odds by reaching the final, having beaten Aberdeen and Motherwell on the way.

The League Championship was won by Celtic again, their third in succession and 35th overall. They were pushed hard by Hibernian, who led the table for a spell in mid-season, but two losses at home and away to Celtic gave the Glasgow side the advantage. Rangers finished third after a strong comeback in the second half of the season following a very poor start in which they lost home games to newly promoted Alloa and Arbroath. Livingston and Dundee United tussled for the final European place, and in the end Livingston clinched it.

At the bottom, Ross County had a poor start to the season and looked set for relegation, but a recovery in mid-season raised some hope of a reprieve. They slumped again and eventually finished bottom, behind Arbroath who returned to the 'B' Division after one season. Dundee managed to escape the bottom two on the last day of the season, but were eventually relegated after losing the play-off to Greenock Morton. Alloa had an excellent season, surprising those who thought that they would be for a quick return to the 'B' level, and finished in a very creditable 7th place, as well as reaching the Summer Cup final where they lost to Celtic.

In Division 'B', Inverness started off in barnstorming fashion and never looked back. They lost only one game all season, a surprise 2—1 defeat to Falkirk, and finished 21 points ahead of St Johnstone, who made an immediate return to 'A' status. Dunfermline and Dumbarton made the play-offs, along with Greenock Morton, who sneaked into fifth place on the last day of the season at the expense of Raith Rovers. Morton thus had to play three rounds to be able to gain promotion, and this they did, winning all three ties. In the final they beat Dundee 5—2 on aggregate to secure a place in the top tier next season. At the bottom, East Fife dropped in to Division 'C1' and Cowdenbeath survived afetr winning their play-off match against Forfar Athletic. East Fife will be replaced by Division 'C1' winners Peterhead.

Celtic won the Albion Cup with a 3—1 win against Hamilton in the final, and thus completed a treble of trophies for the season. Hamilton reached the final after a thrilling encounter with Rangers that ended 4—4 after extra time, and the Lanarkshire side edged out the Glasgow giants 7—6 on penalties.

Albion Cup Bracket

Summer Cup

The Summer Cup has been expanded to include all 32 Division 'A' and 'B' teams instead of just the 16 Division 'A' teams. The competition was played according to a bracket with the initial positions in the bracket determined by a draw. In the draw the Division 'A' teams were in Pot 1 and the Division 'B' teams in Pot 2. The Pot 2 teams were drawn at home in the First Round. The pairings and hosts of each tie in subsequent rounds were detemined by the initial position in the bracket.
